Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations. They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.  (1)

The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly. Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses.  (2)  So they are called "diseases of civilization".Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.

Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none.  (3)  However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.

Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones. They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits. They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains.  (4)  We eat six times more salt than our ancestors. We eat more sugar. We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.

                      (5)  But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.

              (1) _________

__  (1)  __ When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when an executive gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure beats dance into view.

The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels.__  (2)  __.

The first and most basic level of wants involves food.Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears:clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War Ⅱthese wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans.__  (3)  __It included such items as automobiles and new houses.

By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. While the other levels involve physical satisfaction-the feeding, comfort, safety, and transportation of the human body-this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, and entertainment. __  (4)  __

On this level, a greater percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?

A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more on taxes to pay for government action against disease, ignorance, crime and prejudice. __  (5)  __In this way, we can enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.

As most of us know, talking and listening don’t go smoothly every time. Will parents take you seriously, believe what you say, listen to and respect your opinions?  (1)   But some of what happens depends on you, too. Since communication is a two-way street, the way you talk can influence how well a parent listens and understands you. So here are some guidelines to consider when talking to parents:

˜Be clear and direct. Be as clear as you can about what you think, feel, and want.  (2)   They can listen better or be more helpful if they understand what you mean and what’s really going on.

˜Be honest. If you’re always honest, a parent will be likely to believe what you say. If you sometimes hide the truth or add too much drama, parents will have a harder time believing what you tell them. If you lie, they’ll find it hard to trust you.

˜Try to understand their point of view. If you have a disagreement, can you see your parents’ side?  (3)   Telling parents you understand their views and feelings helps them be willing to see yours, too.

˜Try not to argue or complain. Using a tone that’s friendly and respectful makes it more likely parents will listen and take what you say seriously.  (4)   If you think your emotions might get the better of you, do something to blow off steam before talking: Go for a run. Cry.  (5)   Do whatever it takes to sound calm when you need to.

              (1) A. Hit your pillow.
              B. If you can, say so.
              C. A lot depends on your parent.
              D. Think twice before you make a decision.
              E. Your parents won’t always see things your way.
              F. Give details that can help parents understand your situation.
              G. Of course, this is hard for any of us when we’re feeling heated about something.

Personally, I believe that the female brain is mainly built for empathy—the ability to understand other people—and the male brain for building systems.  (1)  For example, women are more likely to read magazines on fashion and parenting, while men will choose magazines featuring computers and sports.

You may think that these preferences are influenced by the way people are taught to behave when growing up. However, this is not the case. A new study carried out at the University of Cambridge shows that newborn girls look longer at a face, and newborn boys look longer at a mobile.   (2)   It has also been observed that girls are better at noticing signs of changes in other people's feelings. Boys, however, seem to enjoy building toy towers and playing with toys having clear functions.  (3)  People whose jobs are in the construction industries are almost male. Maths and engineering, which require high levels of systems thinking, are also male-chosen disciplines. Why do men and women have the difference? Actually women have four times as many brain neurons that connect the right and left part of their brains. Because of it, women have a better ability to multitask than men.  (4)   Men tend to focus on a limited number of problems at a time. They will separate themselves from problems and view tasks as independent from one another.

Some people may worry that I am suggesting one gender is better than the other, but this is not the case. My theory says that males and females differ in the kinds of things that they find easy, but that both genders have their strengths and weaknesses.   (5)   It is not true. The study simply looks at males and females as two groups, and asks what differences exist and why they are there.

              (1) A. Generally speaking, there are clear differences.

              B. You can see the same kind of pattern in the adult workplace.

              C. Their preference for building systems may change over time.

              D. They will consider many sources of information at the same time.

              E. It is important to stress that the female brain may be built more for empathy.

              F. That suggests certain differences between male and female brains are biological.

              G. Others may think the theory creates a belief of what a particular type of person is like.

              Successisontheothersideoffailure

Everybody wants success. Some people aim for it; others just talk about it. (1) But the truth is that it's closer than you think. It's just on the other side. You have to want it enough, and be willing enough to get it.

It is on the other side of fear. Fear is your biggest obstacle(障碍). It will cause you to make decisions that may seem “right” at the time. (2)

It is on the other side of excuses. You either get it or you don't. The minute you find a reason not to take another step towards success is the moment you stop being successful. In the symphony of success, excuses are just noise.

It is on the other side of obstacles. Everyone faces challenges—different ones at different times. We all handle the same challenges differently; we all have different results. It's how you handle each one and what you do with the results that count. (3) Remember, you've got to pass obstacles in order to succeed.

               (4) They call it a ladder of success for a reason. You need to climb it in order to get somewhere. It's not an escalator(自动扶梯). You can't stand there and let it do the work for you. (5) It's going to take determination and commitment on your part to get up and over that wall.

              (1) A. You have to do the work yourself.

              B. It takes effort, commitment and follow-through.

              C. You'll be carrying a heavy load on your shoulders.

              D. Often times it just seems like something too far out of reach.

              E. But they're preventing you from actually getting over that wall.

              F. Even if it works for other people, the same thing just doesn't work for you.

              G. An obstacle is something you either find a way around or allow to stop you.

Laughter and tears are part of living. But do you find enough time for laughter? I am not asking if you experience lots of good times. Of course we should laugh during the happy times.   (1)

Erma Bombeck is known for her humorous books, but she wrote one that covered a more serious topic:cancer in children.  Erma talks with lots of children with cancer and learns “important life lessons from them  (2)

She tells the experience of 15-year-old Jessica from Burlington. Jessicaˈs leg was amputated (锯掉) at the knee because of cancer. Jessica tells about playing soccer. She kicked the ball hard and it flew off in one direction while her artificial leg flew another way. Then “The tall, pretty person that I am,” she said, “sat on the floor in laughter.”

Jessica may not have laughed about her cancer, but she laughed about dealing with its results.  (3)

Then there is the story of 17-year-old Betsy.  She made her way to the radiation room (放射室) for her regular radiation therapy. As usual, she dropped her hospital gown and, wearing only her birthday suit, climbed onto the table and waited. After a couple of moments she began to realize something disturbing: the extra people in the room were not the medical students she had thought, but rather painters giving an estimate on painting!  (4)  And like Jessica,  her ability to laugh helped her to deal with one of the most difficult things a young person can endure (忍受)  -cancer.

There is a time to weep and a time to laugh  (5)   And youˈll smile at the end.

              (1) A. She was learning to wear an artificial leg.

              B. And her laughter helped her cope.

              C. You would be happy if you find reasons to laugh.

              D. Betsy laughed heartily about the incident.

              E. But do you also laugh during the difficult times?

              F. If you can laugh even when the going gets rough, youˈll make it.

              G. She learns, for instance, that cancer survivors know how to laugh.
