From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates feared no better.  Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.

  “Christmas is a season of giving,” I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”

 When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.

  “I don’t need milk for lunch,” he mumbled(含糊的说话). For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.

 That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal(校长). I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.

 “I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.

 When many people imagine acquiring the wisdom of an older generation, they picture a father-knows-best moment. But the numbers are rapidly changing. Today, 27 percent of married women manage their household finances alone, up from 14 percent a decade ago, according to a recent survey. Among women who are the higher earner in their household(44 percent of married women), 65 percent manage their household’s finance. Among women who earn less than their husbands, half share the responsibility for financial and retirement planning.

  As Mother’s Day approaches, we can look at how mothers can teach kids about money. More than 70 percent of adults say they learned about the importance of saving from their parents. A 2015 survey reports that 75 percent of post-2000 generation say they would take financial advice from their mothers. That advice might be paying off. A survey released earlier in 2016 found that post-2000 generation have increased their savings more than any other generation.

  In a Mother’s Day survey about financial service, 55 percent of people said their mothers encouraged them to be frugal(节俭的). Moms are also well-remembered for teaching kids about sales, and how to tell the difference between a want and a need. (A rule of thumb from some mothers: If nothing bad will happen and if you do not buy the item, it is a want, not a need.)

 Research shows that women are more likely than men to rank long-term goals, such as not outliving retirement savings, as very important. This is wise, because women live three to five years longer than men, on average. Fortunately for women, some studies have shown that women are better investors.

 A recent study found that 60 percent of women believe it is very important to support their family’s financial needs if something were to happen to them. In contrast, only 49 percent of men put this emphasis on their family.

  Many people trust their mothers in other financial lessons. These include the value of saving for a goal, the worth of hard work and the importance of budgeting.
