Ali is from a Middle Eastern country. He now stays in the USA. He smokes a lot of cigarettes (香烟) every
day. He has smoked for nine years. Ali says," I tried to quit (放弃) smoking in my hometown, but it was
impossible. My brothers smoke. All my friends smoke. At parties and at meetings, almost all the men smoke.
Here in the United States, not as many people smoke. It will be easier to change my habit here."
Many smokers are like Ali: they want to stop smoking. The smokers know that smoking is bad for their
health. They know it can cause cancer and heart disease. But it is difficult for them to give up smoking because cigarettes have a drug in them. The drug is nicotine (尼古丁). People who smoke a lot need nicotine.
When a person first begins to smoke, he usually feels terrible. The nicotine makes him sick. In a few days,
the smoker's body is used to the nicotine, and he feels fine. Later, the smoker needs nicotine to keep feeling fine. Without nicotine, he feels bad.
It is very hard to quit smoking, and many people who quit will soon smoke again. At a party or at work they will decide to smoke "just one" cigarette. Then they will smoke another cigarette, and another. Soon they become smokers again. Maybe there is only one easy way to quit smoking: never start.

              1. How long has Ali smoked?
              A. Nine years.
              B. Seven years.
              C. Five years.
              D. Three years.
              2. How do the smokers feel without nicotine?
              A. Fine.
              B. Happy.
              C. Worried.
              D. Bad.
              3. According to Paragraph 2, many smokers want to stop smoking because they ______.
              A. want to go to parties
              B. can't smoke at work
              C. may suffer from cancer
              D. need nicotine and drugs
              4. By writing this text, the writer hopes that people will ______.
              A. stay in their hometown
              B. never start smoking
              C. eat less and smoke more
              D. not live in the United States

Every year more people recognize that it is wrong to kill wildlife for "sport." Progress in this direction
is slow because shooting is not a sport for watching, and only those few who take part realize the cruelty
              and destruction.
The number of gunners, however, grows rapidly. Children too young to develop proper judgments
through independent thought are led along way away by their gunning parents. They are subjected to
advertisements of gun producers who describe shooting as good for their health and guncarrying as a way
of putting redder blood in the veins (血管). They are persuaded by gunner magazines with stories honoring
the chase and the kill. In school they view motion pictures which are supposedly meant to teach them how
to deal with arms safely but which are actually designed to stimulate (刺激) a desire to own a gun. Wildlife
is disappearing because of shooting and because of the loss of wildland habitat (栖息地). Habitat loss will
continue with our increasing population, but can we slow the loss of wildlife caused by shooting? There
doesn't seem to be any chance if the serious condition of our birds is not improved.
Wildlife belongs to everyone and not to the gunners alone. Although most people do not shoot, they seem
to forgive shooting for sport because they know little or nothing about it. The only answer, then, is to bring
the truth about sport shooting to the great majority of people.
Now, it is time to realize that animals have the same right to life as we do and that there is nothing fair or
right about a person with a gun shooting the harmless and beautiful creatures. The gunners like to describe
what they do as character-building, but we know that to wound an animal and watch it go through the agony
of dying can make nobody happy. If, as they would have you believe, gun-carrying and killing improve human-
character, then perhaps we should encourage war.
              1. According to the text, most people do not seem to be against hunting because _____.
              A. they have little knowledge of it
              B. it helps to build human character
              C. it is too costly to stop killing wildlife
              D. they want to keep wildlife under control
              2. The underlined word "agony" in the last paragraph probably means _____.
              A. form
              B. condition
              C. pain
              D. sadness
              3. According to the text, the films children watch at school actually _____.
              A. teach them how to deal with guns safely
              B. praise hunting as character-building
              C. describe hunting as an exercise
              D. encourage them to have guns of their own
              4. It can be inferred from the text that the author seems to _____.
              A. blame the majority of people
              B. worry about the existence of wildlife
              C. be in favour of war
              D. be in support of character-building

Your body, which has close relations with the food you eat, is the most important thing you
own, so it needs proper treatment and proper nourishment (营养).The old saying "An apple a
day keeps the doctor away "is not as silly as some people think. The body needs fruit and
vegetables because they contain vitamin C. Many people take extra vitamins in pill form,
believing that these will make them healthy.
But a good diet is made up of nourishing food and this gives all the vitamins you need. The
body doesn't need or use extra vitamins, so why waste money on them?
In the modern western world, many people are too busy to bother about eating properly.
They  throw anything into their stomachs, eating hurriedly and carelessly. The list of illnesses
caused or made worse by bad eating habits is frightening.
              1. "Your body has close relations with the food you eat." It really means that ______.
              A. all kinds of food you eat can be made into your body
              B. your body is made up of the food you eat
              C. what you eat has great effect on your health
              D. the more you eat, the fitter you will feel
              2. In the modern western countries ______.
              A. people don't want to pay more attention to their eating
              B. lots of people's illnesses are caused or made worse by bad eating habits
              C. people throw everything into their stomachs without chewing
              D. people are only too busy to cook meals for themselves
              3. From the passage we can draw a conclusion that if we want to keep healthy, we should ______.
              A. only eat an apple a day
              B. eat properly
              C. take as many vitamin pills as possible
              D. throw something into our stomachs slowly and carefully

The food we eat seems to have a great effect on our health. Although science has made big steps in
making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has
shown that perhaps eighty percent of human illness is related to food and forty percent of cancer is
related to food as well. That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, some researchers
realized that things commonly used to keep colour in meats and other food additives (添加剂) caused
              cancer.
Yet, these additives remain in our food, and it is difficult to know which things on the wrappings (包
装) of foods are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give
penicillin to their animals, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of cows. Sometimes
similar tings are supplied to animals not for their health, but just to make a profit.
The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to get a higher price on the market.
Although some countries have tried to control such things, the practice continues.
              1. Which food is the healthiest at present?
              A. chocolate
              B. alcohol
              C. fresh vegetables
              D. French fries
              2. According to this passage, we can know
              A. perhaps most of human illness is caused by what we eat
              B. perhaps most kinds of cancer are related to what people eat
              C. cancer was discovered in 1945
              D. science has made food unfit to eat
              3. Things that are used to keep colours in meats are      .
              A. harmful
              B. useless
              C. helpless
              D. dangerous
              4. All the additives     __ .
              A. are bright and colourless
              B. are not bright and colourful
              C. have indirect effects on our health
              D. have direct effects on our health
              5. Which of the following is not true?
              A. Some wrappings of food are harmful.
              B. Farmers try to make more money on the market by fattening their animals.
              C. "The practice continues" means "things are still going on like that".
              D. We needn't take care of what we eat.

Nowadays, most of us live a busy life. What do you do to keep yourself relaxed?
Besides spending time with family, having a glass of wine with friends or reading a book,
              how about a hobby?
Personally, I'm a collector. I like blue and white pieces the best---blue and white
anything﹗Plates, jars, vases, cups, bowls---I love them all. Collecting items is like
something you can't get enough of
. You get one, and you want to have more.
I find collecting to be a fun and inspirational hobby. In many ways, it's like a puzzle
I'm never tired of solving. I look high and low for new pieces to add to my collection. I
can often be found visiting Marshell's, looking over their inexpensive offerings. In fact, I
found one of my favorite pieces there.
I've mixed inexpensive pieces from Marshell's with more expensive finds. A lot of times,
it's the piece I'm not looking for that falls into my lap; I find a way to make it part of my
blue and white family. What I love about my collection is that when I get inspired, I can
move them around the house, mix and match and make things look fresh and new.
Ever since I was a little girl, blue has been my favorite color. I think I got it from my
aunt in Mexico. Some of my earliest memories are visiting her in Mexico and sitting on a
chair in her kitchen, which had blue and white tiles(瓷砖)from the floor to the ceiling. I
would spend countless hours admiring all the beautiful blue and white plates and shiny blue
tiles around her kitchen. Once I had a home, I began to build my own blue and white
              collection.

              1. We can infer that in the writer's opinion,_____________.
              A. having a hobby can help us relax
              B. reading a book alone is really boring
              C. keeping a hobby is not easy for most of people
              D. having a glass of wine with friends is not a good idea
              2. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean?_____
              A. Collecting things requires a lot of money.
              B. People always want more than they need.
              C. People may not know what they want to collect.
              D. Once you start collecting things, it's hard to stop.
              3. If something falls into your lap, it means you_________.
              A. have been looking for it
              B. don't know what it is
              C. get it unexpectedly
              D. like it very much
              4. What's the last paragraph mainly about?_____
              A. When the writer started collecting things.
              B. When the writer started liking blue things.
              C. What kind of thing the writer collected first.
              D. Why the writer liked her aunt's things so much.
            • 6.      Not long ago, many doctors in the West laughed at the suggestion that they might learn something
from traditional Asian systems of healing. Most of them thought that Asian herbal (药草的) medicine
and acupuncture(针灸) were believed in only by simple people who knew no better. Western doctors
relied mainly on chemical cures as the safest and surest way to treat illnesses. The scientific age of
antibiotics(抗生素), "miracle drugs" and heart transplants encouraged the public to that there must be
a pill for every illness. It was true that often the drug companies provided what the public wanted: a
speedy temporary cure and didnot remove the real cause of the illness. Moreover, some people actually
became ill through taking too much medicine.
Many people in the West are now beginning to look for more natural cures for their illnesses and
often they turn to the ancient wisdom of the East. There are some doctors in Britain now who offer their
patients acupuncture treatment. Recently an Indian company which produces a natural medicine based
on the biba root has sold some to Germany. The World Health Organization(WHO) encourages
doctors not to rely too greatly on expensive Western medicines but to choose them carefully and use
              also their traditional herbal cures.
The mixture of Eastern and Western medicine has been practiced very successfully in China. China is
still the only country in the world where the traditional doctor using herbal medicine and acupuncture is
as respected as the Western-trained doctor. Through China all types of doctors are expected to work
together. Western-style doctors are required to take at least a one-year course in traditional medicine,
and the acupunctures must also study the basics of  western medicine. China's way of "having the best
of both worlds" has greatly impressed many visiting doctors from the West.
Experts from the WHO have decided that the time has come to study herbal medicine very carefully
and to decide, by carefully controlled scientific experiments, what good these medicine might do. They
are especially interested in finding cures for illnesses which Western medicine has found "incurable". Six
WHO units have been set up in Hong Kong, Seoul, Sri Lanka, London and Chicago, and so far the
              results have been encouraging.
              1. What conclusion can we draw from the first paragraph?
              A. Miracle drugs are born with science.
              B. Chemical cures have got some side-effects if taken too much.
              C. Chemical cures are better than Asian systems of healing because of its immediate response.
              D. Drug companies are willing to meet the public demands.
              2. What is the true reason for Western doctors to turn to the ancient wisdom of the East ?
              A. Herbal medicine are less expensive.
              B. Western medicines can't work very well in some areas.
              C. China has already set a good example of combining Eastern and Western medicines.
              D. All of the above.
              3. What do you think a Chinese doctor should learn?
              A. Chinese medicine only.
              B. Western medicine only.
              C. Both with different emphasis.
              D. Both equally.

              Travel is good for you

Americans think that travel is good for you. Some even think it can help solve one of the country’s
              worst problems - crime (犯罪).
Crime worries a lot of people. Every year, the number of crimes goes up and up. And many criminals (罪犯) are young. Most of them - 85 percent are boys. They often come from sad homes, with only one
parent or no parents at all. There are problems with alcohol and drugs.
There are many young criminals in prison. But prison doesn’t change them - 60 to 70 percent will go
back to crime when they come out of prison.
One man, Bob Burton, thought of a new idea. In the old days, young men had to live a difficult life on
the road. They learned to be strong and brave, and to help their friends in time of danger. This helped them to grow into men. So Bob Burton started "Vision Quest".
He takes young criminals on a long, long journey with horses and wagons 3,000 miles through seven
states. They are on the road for more than a year.  The young people on Vision Quest (boys and a few
girls) all have bad problems. Most of them have already spent time in prison. This is their last chance.
It’s hard work on the road. The day starts before the sun comes up. The boys and girls have to feed
the horses. Some of them have never loved anyone before. But they can love their horses. That love can
help them to have a new life.
Not all young people on Vision Quest will leave crime behind them. 30 or 40 percent will one day be in prison again. But that’s a lot better then 60 or 70 percent. Bob Burton is right. Travel can be good for youEven today, Americans still say, "Go west, young men".
              1. According to the passage, travel is good for you because it can _____.
              A. get rid of crime completely
              B. change the way of life
              C. help to reduce criminals
              D. not build up your body
              2. Which of the following is NOT the character of the criminals?
              A. Most of them are young.
              B. They often have not a good family.
              C. They may often drink wine too much and take drugs.
              D. They like traveling far away from their homes.
              3. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
              A. As time goes on, the criminals become fewer and fewer.
              B. Most of the criminals will do better after they come out of prison.
              C. Bob’s new idea changes a person better.
              D. The young criminals on Vision Quest all lead a happy life.

              Dear Editor (编辑),
I used to be a doctor in a children's hospital. Sometimes I treated children who had been poisoned (中毒)
by medicines for older family members. The children didn't know the medicine was dangerous; they just knew
it tasted sweet. Children easily opened the bottle that we now use in China.
Some days ago I talked about medicine with an American. He showed me a kind of plastic bottle. The
design was very quite simple and I'm sure our Chinese factories could produce these bottles. The top of the
bottle locks but can be opened by pressing down on it while turning. This is difficult for most young children
to do, though grown-ups can open these bottles very easily.
I'm certain that the price of making such tops would be very low. As a doctor, I'd love to see this done.

On a rainy day, you will see many streams of muddy (多泥的) water running down the slopes (山坡) of
a hill. The water is muddy because it washes away soil from the hill slopes.
Sometimes soil is blown away by strong winds. When the soil is carried away by water or wind, we say
that the land is eroded (侵蚀). This is known as soil erosion.
Plants cannot grow on eroded land. There is not enough soil on eroded land to give them the things they
need. Plants need water and salts from the soil.
We can do a number of things to stop soil erosion. This is called soil conservation (保护).
One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is to grow small plants such as grasses. Their roots
hold the soil tightly together. Another way is to plant trees around an open field. Thus soil erosion by strong
winds cannot take place. Rows of trees act as a very big wall.
Soil erosion on slopes can be stopped by cutting "steps" called terraces (梯田). Water carrying soil cannot
run straight down the slope now. It has to run down the terraces. This slows down the flow of the water.
Most of the soil in the water is left behind on the terraces.
There are some other ways of soil conservation.
              1. On a rainy day the water running down the slopes of a hill is muddy because _____.
              [     ]

              A. there is no terrace on the slopes
              B. there is no small plant on the slopes
              C. it washes away soil from the slopes
              D. there is too much soil on the slopes
              2. Plants cannot grow on eroded land because _____.
              [     ]

              A. there is a lot of sand
              B. there is not enough water and salts
              C. there is no water
              D. the land is too hard
              3. One way of soil conservation on flat, open ground is _____.
              [     ]

              A. to grow small plants such as grasses
              B. to plant trees around an open field
              C. to add fertilizer to the soil
              D. A and B
              4. From the passage we learn that there are _____ ways to reserve soil.
              [     ]

              A. only three
              B. two
              C. more than three
              D. six

                                                                    The Monster of Lake Tianchi
The "Monster of Lake Tianchi" in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province, northeast China, is back in
the news after several recent sightings. The director of a local tourist office, Meng Fanying, said the monster,
which seemed to be black in colour, was ten metres from the edge of the lake during the most recent sighting.
"It jumped out of the water like a seal-about 200 people on Changbai's western peak saw it," he said. Although
no one really got a clear look at the mysterious creature, Xue Junlin, a local photographer, claimed that its head
              looked like a horse.
In another recent sighting, a group of soldiers claim they saw an animal moving on the surface of the water.
The soldiers, who were walking along the side of the lake, watched the creature swimming for about two
minutes. "It was greenish-black and had a round head with 10-centimetre horns", one of the soldiers said.
A third report came from Li Xiaohe, who was visiting the lake with his family. He claims to have seen a
round black creature moving quickly through the water. After three or four hundred metres it dived into the
water. Ten minutes later the monster appeared again and repeated the action. Mr Li Xiaohe said that he and his
family were able to see the monster clearly because the weather was fine and the lake was calm.
There have been reports of monsters in Lake Tianchi since the beginning of the last century, although no
one has seen one close up. Some photos have been taken but they are not clear because it was too far away.
Many people think the monster may be a distant cousin of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. They also think
that there might be similar creatures in other lakes around the world. Scientists, however, are sceptical. They
say that the low-temperature lake is unlikely to be able to support such large living creatures.
Lake Tianchi is the highest volcanic lake in the world. It is 2,189 metres high and covers an area of about
ten square kilometres. In places it is more than 370 metres deep.
